Room 14 spent the day with Miss Nicola and they learnt about bees. Everyone in the school has a new class garden and we were wondering what insects might visit. There was a bee farmer at our school today to remove a swarm that settled in the Pohutukawa tree. He answered our questions and taught us lots of new things we didn't know. This book taught us how a hive works and we created a drama to help us remember. Bees teach us how to work together as a community.

Room 9 was in Tawaraunui today and we did lots of exciting things! We added to the mural the seniors were doing and created hand flowers.
We visited the life education truck and then created our bodies with organs!
We also learnt about Cuban music and Faith learnt to dance Latin American style while others played the bongos.

Room 4 was with Miss Nicola the whole day yesterday and we made sock puppets! We used this language experience to learn about how to adapt our writing style and create explanations. Explanations inform our reader with interesting facts and a sequence of events so they would be able to follow it themselves. We discovered we could use some skills we had already learnt in writing recounts but we had to change others.

Room 16 listened to the story "I need my monster!" on the website storylineonline.net and loved the idea of having your own pet monster that lived under your bed. We traced around their bodies and made their shadows into scary but friendly personal monsters. The children picked what features they wanted based on the monsters in the book and then they learnt how to mix the colours they wanted and painted them themselves. We had an exhibition and invited all the other classes to visit the monsters and everyone was so excited to see such fantastic artwork from our new entrant class. They took their monsters home to put under their beds so they would sleep well like the character in the book.

The last group from room 13 created a story about a lonely queen who lived in a castle all by herself. She went into the forest searching for friends which made her very scared. She found a King on his horse and this made her very excited. He didn't have a castle. The queen invited the king to live in her castle and he rode off to fetch all his kingdom to live with the queen. The queen was very happy.
This group from room 13 invented a story about a family losing their dogs. They are sad. They go looking for them in a forest and it gets dark. Luckily they find a cabin to stay in and they feel relieved. During the night they are terrified because of strange noises. They think the cabin is haunted! They survive the night and open the door in the morning and their dogs are asleep on the doorstep and they are so happy.
This group from room 13 wrote a story about a dragon invading a village. They trap the dragon and then make friends with it.They invite the dragon to live in their village and he protects them and they all live happily ever after. This is the backdrop they painted and on Monday they will work on performing their play.

Room 2 Painted their own story about going on adventure through a dark forest and sneaking past a dragon in a cave, flying over a rainbow and then finding treasure at the end! They practiced changing their face and body positions for the different emotions in the story and came up with words and sounds. We learnt to use a flow diagram plan for writing and practiced the soundscape that went with this. This will help them write their own stories in class later.
